# Metatron documentation

> What Metatron's MCP interfaces are, which ones are public, and how coding agents can find accurate setup instructions.

Metatron is a local agent system. This site documents how coding agents connect to Metatron's Model Context Protocol (MCP) interfaces, and it explains the security boundary around them.

<Warning>
  This site documents **public documentation access**. It does not grant access to Metatron's internal runtime, its agent instructions, or its private data. Read [Security model](/security-model) before connecting anything.
</Warning>

## Three different interfaces

Metatron work involves three separate things. Do not treat them as one.

| Interface | What it is | Who can use it | Documented here |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Local Metatron MCP** | A stdio server running on a single operator's machine. It exposes internal resources to that machine's MCP client. | Only the operator who runs it. Access is not shared by this site. | Not publicly documented. Requires approval first. |
| **Public docs-search MCP** | A search server that Metatron hosts for this site. It returns published pages from this documentation only. | Anyone. It is unauthenticated and covers public pages only. | [Yes](/docs-search-mcp) |
| **Authenticated remote Metatron MCP** | A possible future service that would expose approved Metatron tools over a network. | Not available. It needs authentication, authorization, auditing, and revocation before it exists. | No. Future project. |

Connecting to the docs-search MCP lets your agent look up this documentation. It does not let your agent read Metatron's files, call Metatron tools, or act on Metatron's behalf.

## Where to start

* [Quickstart](/quickstart): connect your agent to the docs-search MCP and confirm the connection works.
* [Security model](/security-model): what each interface can and cannot reach.
* [Architecture](/architecture): how the pieces fit together.
* Setup guides for [Claude Code](/clients/claude-code), [Codex](/clients/codex), [Gemini CLI](/clients/gemini-cli), [Windsurf](/clients/windsurf), [Cline](/clients/cline), [Zed](/clients/zed), and [JetBrains AI Assistant](/clients/jetbrains-ai-assistant).

## Client coverage

Each guide states how its syntax was verified. A client without a published guide here has not been checked against its current documentation, so no setup is claimed for it. This currently includes VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Roo Code, OpenCode, and Continue.

<Note>
  Clients change their configuration formats. Check each guide against the client's current documentation before you rely on it, and report any mismatch.
